WINTER POND
Underground springs frequently fill this magical area in the Nature Park with water when it rains and then the water drains slowly away. The vernal pool known as the Winter Pond is located on the west side of the park near the Oatfield overlook. It has been under restoration this past Winter to removed ivy, blackberries and other invasives.
The Nature Park’s Winter Pond project has been selected by the Xerces Society for an Oregon Monarch and Pollinator Habitat Kit award. The Xerces Habitat Kit consists of a selection of native plants that will thrive in this damp environment and assist with habitat restoration. The 186 plants will arrive in mid-October, and FOGNAP will have until the end of November to plant them. The plants will be placed in the seasonal wetland and riparian area surrounding the pond. Check out the progress on your visits to the Nature Park. The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation is an international nonprofit organization that protects the natural world through the conservation of invertebrates and their habitats. FOGNAP member Cindy Hines provided the vision for the project and applied for the successful grant. |
